How the typing test works

You get a one-minute sprint on common English words. Type as accurately as you can. When the clock hits zero, you see gross WPM, net WPM, and accuracy — the same metrics serious trainers use, not a vanity “score” with unclear rules.

Unlike one-off speed tests that reset your memory the moment you leave, Typing Coach remembers which keys and letter pairs you miss and builds your next practice around them. The test is the diagnosis; the coach is the treatment.

No account is required to start. Your progress stays in the browser until you optionally sign in for cloud sync and the weekly leaderboard.

What is a good typing speed?

Speed without accuracy is noise. Use net WPM (errors subtracted) as your real benchmark:

For full context by role (students, developers, Portuguese keyboard users), read the typing speed guide.

How WPM is calculated

Typing Coach uses the standard definition: one “word” equals five characters, including spaces. That keeps scores comparable across sites.

If two people both hit 80 gross WPM but one types at 98% accuracy and the other at 88%, only the first earned a strong net score. Train accuracy first; speed follows.

What to do after the test

  1. Note your net WPM and the keys that felt sticky — not just the number.
  2. Open Fix / Adaptive mode in the app. It prioritises the mistakes you just made.
  3. If you are still hunting and pecking, run the touch typing path from home row outward instead of more sprints.
  4. Retest in a few days under the same conditions (same layout, similar time of day). Progress is a trend, not a single run.

Optional: challenge a friend with the same passage, or submit a timed run to the public weekly board after signing in.

Tips before you start

Typing test vs ongoing practice

A typing test answers “how fast am I right now?” Practice answers “how do I get better?” Most free tests only answer the first question. Typing Coach is built for the second: finger curriculum with accuracy gates, weak-key drills, progress history, and daily goals.

Use this page when you need a clean baseline. Stay in the app when you want improvement that compounds week after week.

FAQ

Is this typing test free?

Yes. The full app — tests, finger curriculum, adaptive drills — is free. Accounts are optional for cloud sync and the leaderboard.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Practice and take tests instantly. Sign in only if you want scores on the weekly leaderboard or progress synced across devices.

How is WPM calculated?

Standard formula: (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM subtracts errors so accuracy still matters.

Can I test on a Portuguese keyboard?

Yes. Switch to the PT-PT layout in the app or start from the PT-PT landing so ç and punctuation map correctly.

Why is my score lower than on another site?

Different sites use different word lists, durations, and error rules. Prefer net WPM and retest on the same tool for trends.
