Words per minute is the standard measure of typing speed. Run a timed sprint, read gross and net WPM plus accuracy, then train the keys that cost you speed.
WPM stands for words per minute. In nearly every modern typing test, one “word” is defined as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. That convention makes scores comparable whether you type short English words or longer technical text.
Raw character counts alone are hard to compare. WPM packages speed into a number people recognise from school, job screens, and certification tests.
Gross WPM reflects how fast correct characters flow. Net WPM subtracts errors so a messy 90 can become a cleaner 70. Typing Coach shows both so you know whether to push speed or clean accuracy first.
If your gross is high and net is low, you are guessing. Slow down until accuracy sits near 96%+, then rebuild speed. If gross and net are close, you have clean form — then you can safely add pace.
The weekly leaderboard ranks by net WPM for exactly this reason.
After a sprint, you can challenge a friend with the same passage via a share link — zero accounts, pure client-side comparison. Or open the public weekly leaderboard if you sign in and submit timed runs.
Long term, sprints alone plateau. Alternate:
Words per minute. One “word” is standardized as five characters, including spaces.
Deep links support ?secs=30 or ?secs=120. The default sprint is 60 seconds.
Net WPM for real skill and leaderboard ranking. Gross helps you see raw pace before accuracy penalties.
You stopped guessing. Clean slower is better than dirty faster — pace returns with practice.
